One question I’m most frequently asked is, “Why are there so many more
kids diagnosed with autism now than there were when we were growing up?”
I’ve long held to the belief that the reason for this is because we are
more knowledgeable, educated, and informed about the disorder, thus, the
rise in the number of diagnoses. The following article further explores that idea,
as well as outlines how the recent changes in diagnostic criteria in the
DSM-V may impact the prevalence of children with the disorder.
